An inventory of 1,474 hectares of windbreak strips was carried out in Dedoplistskaro municipality
Giorgi Misheladze, the chairman of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring, visited the inventoried windbreaks in several locations in Dedoplistskaro municipality and met with the owners of windbreaks that are now in private possession.
As of today, approximately 80% of the 1,474 hectares of inventoried windbreak strips in Dedoplistskaro municipality have been destroyed. Out of this area, 79 hectares are under private ownership. In the Dedoplistskaro municipality, classified as a Group I municipality due to its exposure to strong winds, it is very important to protect land resources from the negative processes caused by climate change, maintain land fertility, and protect and restore windbreak strips.
It is possible to restore or rebuild windbreaks on agricultural land plots within the territory of Georgia that have been registered as windbreaks and have undergone inventory. As such, collaborating with private landowners to grant windbreak status holds significant importance. At this stage, agreements have already been reached with 33 landowners within the municipality, who collectively possess 11 hectares of windbreak areas.
As part of the inventory process, the actual condition of the windbreaks was documented, which included those occupied by green plants, those that had been partially or completely destroyed, and the land plots that, according to records maintained by state authorities, were designated as windbreaks. The Agency has been implementing a windbreak strip inventory program (field protection) since 2021, following approval by the Government of Georgia. According to the inventory work plan, the current inventory is in progress in the municipalities of Dedoplistskaro, Kareli, Kaspi, and Dusheti for the year 2023. As of October 31, the total inventoried area has reached 2,697 hectares. From 2021 to 2023, a cumulative total of 3,967 hectares of windbreak strips have been inventoried, with 1,716 hectares already registered with the National Agency of Public Registry. The process of assigning status is ongoing.
