National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring

Working Meeting with World Bank Representatives Held at the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring

The Chairman of the Agency, Giorgi Misheladze, discussed the steps taken to develop a unified database of land balance and land resources during a meeting with Anna Corsi, Head of the Land Component of the Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation, and Land Project (GRAIL). Zdravko Galic, an expert in information technology, joined the meeting online.

Since late 2023, the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring has been developing spatial data on Georgia's land resources, involving the collection and processing of available information on the country's land, the interpretation of orthophoto plans using the Corine classifier adapted to Georgia's geographical conditions, and the integration of data from topographic maps, land use plans, field inspections, and other sources. The project is now in its final stages.

At the meeting, attended by representatives of relevant departments of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the parties discussed the current needs for the agency's technical strengthening at this stage, addressed land consolidation issues, and planned future steps.

The Agricultural Land Management and Monitoring Strengthening Subcomponent of the Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation, and Land Project (GRAIL) has a budget of $14 million, financed equally by the World Bank and the Georgian state budget. The project's implementation will support the development of land management, enhance the agricultural land market, and lay a strong foundation for an efficient land use system.

The subcomponent for strengthening agricultural land management and monitoring aims to enhance the capacities of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring by developing and implementing a land information system, introducing a methodology for large-scale agricultural land assessment at the national level, formulating a sustainable land management strategy, and preparing and implementing a national land consolidation strategy.
