A working meeting was held in Dedoplistskaro to discuss the construction of windbreaks
Giorgi Misheladze, Chairman of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring, met with farmers in Dedoplistskaro municipality to present details of the work related to the construction of windbreaks. For local farmers whose agricultural lands are located within the windbreak protection area, the restoration and construction of windbreaks is crucial for both soil conservation and the sustainable development of their farms.
The working meeting was attended by Nikoloz Janiashvili, Mayor of Dedoplistskaro Municipality
The parties assessed the possibilities for implementing the windbreak restoration and planting project in Dedoplistskaro municipality. Giorgi Misheladze presented to the farmers the stages of windbreak establishment, which include designing the windbreaks, planting woody species, and maintaining the plants over a five-year period. The design is carried out individually for each plot, determining the type of windbreak and the woody species appropriate for the specific landscape, existing crops, and climatic conditions.
Farmers shared their views on how they could be involved in the successful implementation of the project, as well as on mechanisms for the protection and maintenance of new plantings and, later, mature trees. It was noted that, to prevent damage to the plantings from uncontrolled grazing and fires, it is necessary to strengthen legislative regulations concerning the protection of windbreaks.
The meeting emphasized the importance of developing a continuous windbreak, which enhances the overall efficiency of the system. The placement of several windbreaks was discussed to ensure that, in the event of restoration or development, the arrangement of land plots would support this principle.
Dedoplistskaro is classified as a first-category municipality in terms of wind intensity. The total area of inventoried and officially recognized windbreaks is 1,295.48 hectares, one of the highest in the country. Therefore, timely measures are necessary to protect the soil and maintain its fertility, in order to reduce the negative impacts of wind erosion in the municipality in the future.
