Government Approves State Program Inventory of Windbreak (Field Protection) Strips
The “State Program Inventory of Windbreak (Field Protection) Strips" prepared by the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia aims to identify and inventory existing windbreaks in Georgia and register them in the National Agency of Public Registry (NAPR).
Within the framework of the program, the existing windbreak areas in the country will be identified and their actual condition described. Additionally, the species composition and age structure of the woody plants in these windbreaks will be determined. This will enable the registration, rehabilitation, and replanting of the windbreaks.
As part of the program, windbreaks covered by green vegetation, as well as areas where green vegetation is partially or fully destroyed, or where official documents from state agencies confirm their previous status as windbreaks, will undergo inventory.
The primary function of windbreak strips is to protect the soil from wind erosion and maintain its fertility. Degraded soil remains out of agricultural circulation for a long time and requires special measures before it can be used again in agricultural production.
The National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring will implement measures outlined in the program in agreement with the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
According to the project, inventory of windbreaks will commence in 2021, with completion planned for 2025. In 2021, the inventory of windbreaks will be carried out in selected municipalities of the Kakheti region.
