Unified Database of Land Resources in Georgia Created After 20-Year Gap
Following a 20-year interval, the collection, processing, and systematization of data regarding Georgia’s land fund has become possible through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture and the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring.
"The unified database of the land fund comprises two directions: data on agricultural and non-agricultural land. Agricultural lands are divided into areas covered by annual and perennial crops. As for the non-agricultural section, data is presented across multiple categories: the forest fund, protected territories, the water fund, glaciers, lakes, urban areas, and others. It provides a complete picture of Georgia’s land fund by designation and category," stated Giorgi Misheladze, Chairman of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring.
According to him, during the period when a unified land database did not exist, the state relied on National Agency of Public Registry (NAPR) data regarding registered lands and statistical data that was often based on verbal surveys. "This data was scattered and fragmented. Today, the unified database of the land fund consolidates data processed by the Ministry, the Public Registry, and other agencies, and most importantly—verified and clarified information processed by the Agency. This will facilitate work for everyone, including both the state and the private sector," Misheladze stated.
The data is public and accessible on the Agency's website: https://land.gov.ge/Ge/Services/Database, while the interactive Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) map of Georgia is available on the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture’s Geographic Information Portal: https://portal.mepa.gov.ge/Ge/user/map/34
