The “Access to State-Owned Pastures” program was discussed at the working meeting held in the Telavi and Gurjaani Municipalities
Merab Kvaraia, the first deputy chairman of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring, introduced the significance of the program and provided technical details on participation to the representatives of self-governments and interested farmers during the meeting.
In the first stage, 610 pastures with a total area of 26,212 ha have been identified in the Kakheti region, of which 1,038 ha are in Telavi municipality, and 608 ha are in Gurjaani municipality.
The aim of the state program is to promote the rational use of pastures and to establish a fair and effective transfer mechanism for farmers. Under this program, only farmers who own cattle and/or small livestock are authorized to lease pasture land for a period of three years.
To date, data for 116 pastures from the Samtskhe-Javakheti, Kakheti, and Kvemo Kartli regions, totaling 14,786 ha, have been published. Registration of applications has commenced and will continue until April 26. Detailed information is available on the websites of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (www.mepa.gov.ge) and the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring (www.land.gov.ge). The list of available pastures will be updated gradually.
