The area and funding for the inventory activities under the State Program for windbreak (field protection) strips are increasing
According to preliminary data, the projected area for inventory works in 2023 is 2,448 ha, with a budget of 1.5 million GEL. This budget marks an increase of 900 thousand GEL compared to the funding allocated in this current year of 2022. The inventory operations will encompass four municipalities: Dedoplistskaro, Kaspi, Kareli, and Dusheti.
Within the framework of the program, the description of the actual condition of windbreaks is underway which include detection of existing, degraded and destroyed windbreaks and determination of plant species composition. For registration purposes in the public register, the cadastral survey drawings of the relevant plots of land are prepared, status is assigned, and then registered in the public register as a windbreak strip.
The mentioned program commenced on June 16, 2021. As of today, approximately 1,235 ha of windbreak strips have been inventoried, and the status registration of 319.2 ha of state-owned windbreak strips is now complete. In 2021, inventory work was conducted in the Telavi municipality, and this year, it concluded in the Sagarejo and Marneuli municipalities.
It should be noted that the real estate record already includes information about the windbreak strips and their status. Additionally, a conditional sign denoting the windbreak strip is marked on the cadastral plan.
The inventory process is being carried out according to the plan approved by the order of the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. The inventory will end on March 1, 2025. The next stage is their restoration/rehabilitation and the construction of new windbreaks, which will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Law on Windbreaks.
Windbreak strips play a crucial role in safeguarding soil against wind erosion, promoting moisture retention, and optimizing irrigation water usage. Implementing a windbreak strip can result in an up to 30% increase in yield.
