National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring

The Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences hosted a discussion on the Concept Document for the National Policy on Sustainable Pasture Management

At the session of the Agrarian Innovations Commission of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GAAS), Mr. Giorgi Misheladze, Chairman of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring (NASLM), along with experts from the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (REC Caucasus), presented the key directions outlined in the concept document for the national policy on sustainable pasture management.

The concept, developed with the involvement of Georgian and international experts, aims to establish a unified and coherent approach for the sustainable use and protection of pastures. Its primary objectives are to determine and establish legal and economic conditions that enable rural populations and farmers to use pastures, prevent land degradation, preserve biodiversity, and promote fertility improvement and sustainable development within the livestock sector.

The document outlines the vision and principles of sustainable pasture management, covering key aspects such as land ownership and usage rights, institutional arrangements for ensuring sustainability, economic and fiscal considerations, as well as planning and monitoring of pasture utilization.

The national policy document for sustainable pasture management serves as the foundation for the development of the necessary legislative package pertaining to pasture management.

The participants of the Agrarian Innovations Commission session at the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences acknowledged that the principles outlined in the concept effectively address the current challenges concerning pastures. Therefore, they are expected to facilitate the introduction and establishment of sustainable pasture management practices.
